We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated individual to manage and develop the FabLab at Sandwell College on a full-time, permanent basis. This is an exciting opportunity to shape an inclusive, state-of-the-art space for innovation, enterprise, and collaboration across vocational departments and the wider community.

Responsibilities

As the FabLab Manager, you will:Lead the planning, design, and delivery of workshops, training, and events to promote high utilisation and achievement of all performance targets. Collaborate with vocational teams (e.g., Engineering, Construction, Art & Design) to embed digital fabrication and creative technologies into teaching and learning. Support project-based learning and enterprise initiatives by facilitating prototyping, design, and manufacturing. Oversee daily operations including user access, inventory management, and providing hands-on technical support. Monitor performance data, evaluate impact, and take strategic actions to ensure objectives are met. Develop and enforce clear health, safety, and operational procedures for safe and efficient use of the FabLab. Line-manage the FabLab Assistant and support the development of volunteers, ensuring team performance and satisfaction.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise


To be successful in this role, you will have:

A strong background in digital manufacturing and design, with experience in laser cutting, CNC routing/milling, and 2D/3D CAD. A relevant degree (ideally in an engineering or related discipline). Experience in working with commercial clients and delivering tailored events or projects. Confidence in managing day-to-day operations and events, while planning strategically for continuous improvement. Experience managing people, volunteers, or teams, with a focus on development and impact. A strong understanding of health, safety, and compliance within technical environments.
