Head of Family Law - Key Leadership Responsibilities

Provide inspirational day-to-day leadership, support, and direction to a multidisciplinary family law team including solicitors, legal executives, and support staff. Oversee and manage case allocations, workflow, and resource planning to ensure the effective delivery of client services. Coordinate and deliver structured supervision, file reviews, and ongoing training, maintaining compliance with regulatory standards and best practice in family law. Act as a role model for the firm's values; lead by example in professionalism, ethical conduct, and client care.

Family Law Practice - Key Operational Duties



Handle or supervise complex and high-profile family law matters including divorce, financial settlements, private and public law children matters, cohabitation disputes, domestic abuse, and mediation. Continue to build the firm's family department reputation, ensuring delivery of high quality, timely, and cost-effective legal services. Strategically drive the department's development in line with the wider firm's growth and client service goals. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of developments in family legislation and regulatory requirements.

Client-Care, Business Development and Team Wellbeing



Build and foster strong, enduring client relationships based on understanding, empathy, and exceptional service. Manage client feedback to help shape continuous improvement and maintain the firm's outstanding reputation in family law. Collaborate with the Marketing and BD teams to develop strategies for growth, networking, and raising the department's profile locally and nationally. Encourage an inclusive, supportive, and high-performing team culture.

Required Skills & Experience for the Head of Family Law Role



Qualified solicitor (Minimum 4 years PQE) Proven experience managing junior employees or leading a department within a law firm (family law experience strongly preferred). Demonstrated track record of delivering high standards of client care and legal technical excellence. Outstanding communication, coaching, and organisational skills. Commercially astute, with business development experience or ambition to help shape and grow a leading legal team. Calm, positive, and collaborative in approach, resilient under pressure, and proactive in decision making. Commitment to equality, diversity, and creating a positive work environment.
