Taunton Town Council is seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Health and Safety Compliance Officer to support the delivery of a safe and compliant working environment across all council sites and operations. This role is pivotal in ensuring statutory obligations are met, promoting a strong safety culture, and supporting the Health and Safety Lead in maintaining high standards of compliance.

The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting regular safety checks, inspections, and audits; supporting event safety planning; managing documentation and compliance records; and assisting in incident investigations. They will also play a key role in promoting health and safety initiatives and ensuring contractor and vehicle compliance.

This is a hands-on role requiring excellent communication, observational, and organisational skills, along with a strong working knowledge of health and safety legislation. The officer will be expected to travel between sites, so a valid driving licence is essential.

Main Duties:



Completion of statutory weekly and ad hoc safety checks across all council sites. Conducting H&S inspections, preparing reports, and maintaining compliance records. Supporting community event safety assessments. Supporting the Health and Safety Lead in training and development around all matters relating to employee safety. Writing and reviewing risk assessments, Safe Systems of Work, and procedures. Ensure COSHH Risk Assessments are completed, and hazardous substances are stored safely. Ensuring contractor compliance with council H&S standards. Assist with Investigating incidents and near misses, recommending improvements. Conducting ergonomic assessments for office staff. Promoting H&S campaigns and initiatives. Performing fire safety and equipment checks. Performing First Aid checks across all sites including vehicles Managing vehicle compliance records (VDUs, services, folders). Keeping all compliance documentation up to date. Carry out administrative tasks, safety communications, and other reasonable duties as required Promote and model the Council's PACT values - Promote Respect Always, Ambitious and Accountable, Compassionate and Trustworthy - in all aspects of leadership, decision-making, and service delivery. Undertake any other reasonable duties as may be required and are commensurate with the role. Work flexibly, including evenings and weekends, in support of Council activities and events.
