This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated and practical individual to join the Hydrometry and Telemetry (H&T) Team in Cumbria.



The role will mainly be fieldwork & driving long distances across the county working in rural and urban areas. You will collect hydrometric data and carry out maintenance tasks using specialist equipment and hand tools. There will also be computer-based work to validate collected data and provide support to the wider team.



You will be naturally enquiring and seek to improve how we work, and you will enjoy practical site work and data exploration. Some prior experience and understanding of H&T work would be of benefit, but this is not essential as a comprehensive training and mentoring program will be in place to help you succeed.




Whilst you will frequently be working independently you will be part of a bigger team; you will need to develop effective relationships with team members and our partners.




Office base is Penrith, although your home base could be anywhere in Cumbria. You will be assigned a patch of sites, either in Central, South or West Cumbria). The majority of your work time will be spent in the field delivering site work and some working from the office and at home validating the data collected on site. Regular office visits are required for team meetings, liaison and mentoring opportunities.
The team
We are a friendly, skilled, and motivated team. We provide high quality rainfall, surface water (river level and flow) and groundwater data to customers across our area, nationally and with external partners.



Primarily based in Ghyll Mount office, Penrith, we are integrated with H&T team in Lancashire to deliver a 'one team' vital service across CLA, that underpins much of the Environment Agency's statutory responsibilities relating to flood risk and water resource management.
Experience/skills required
You will ideally have a scientific or environmental background, be passionate about the environment, seeking high quality data, be curious, and enjoy using your skills to make a difference, learning & developing.



It is a physically demanding job and fitness is important.

You will be able to demonstrate the following:

Ability to work independently, using your own initiative as required Good communication skills and ability to work well as part of a team Computer literacy, with the ability to use a variety of software Enjoy working outside, sometimes in challenging weather conditions, year-round Comfortable working near and in water Hold a current UK driving licence and be a confident and capable driver


Ideally you will have:

There will be a requirement to participate in the IM (Incident Management) telemetry standby rota (AHO once trained) every 6 weeks; and telemetry helpdesk (weekly).
