Role Overview





This unique, long-term role will act as a shared resource across our studios, embedding best-practice processes and supporting project teams to deliver complex work with clarity, consistency, and control.



As an Internal Project / Design Manager you will manage and optimise internal processes for large-scale projects spanning multiple sectors and offices. With your strong grasp of contracts, particularly NEC, you will ensure seamless coordination, robust change control, and effective programme management. You will operate as part of a central team lead by our Head of Design Management, Laurence Reilly, supporting projects across the business.



Initially, your focus will be on supporting a flagship healthcare project in Plymouth, requiring some on-site presence and active participation in key meetings. This position, (minimum 3 days per week) offers the perfect balance for professionals seeking reduced hours without compromising on impact or responsibility.



You can be based in our Plymouth, Bristol, or Cardiff office--with a willingness to spend time regularly in our Plymouth office.


Key Responsibilities




Lead and administer the internal change control process on large projects, working closely alongside the project team to ensure variations are identified, assessed, approved, recorded and communicated. Manage internal programmes and delivery packages, monitoring interdependencies, risks, and actions to support meeting deadlines. Manage risk, raising early warnings and change events notifications as required. Anticipate challenges and possible issues and ensure the team take appropriate steps to minimise risk and achieve the best outcome. Work closely with contractors and external PMs to align internal programmes with overall contract programmes; propose and agree amendments where required, ensuring compliance with NEC and other relevant contract frameworks. Advise and coach project teams on contract administration, particularly under NEC forms, ensuring compliance and audit trails. Facilitate robust, professional conversations with contractors, clients, and multidisciplinary consultants to resolve issues and maintain programme. Produce clear reporting on change, programme status, risks, and forecasts for internal leadership and clients. Champion consistent, scalable processes and tools across studios to improve efficiency and resolve delivery challenges. Provide the team with guidance and direction to ensure that agreed services, deliverables and duties are met and instigate the change procedure where are additional services are being requested. Manage the appointment, delivery and change process with regards directly appointed consultants. Co-ordinating the multidisciplinary team to ensure efficient communication and delivery, whilst ensuring the highest quality standards are achieved.

About You




Experienced project or design manager with a strong track record on complex, multi-stakeholder design and construction projects. Confident administering NEC contracts (change control, early warnings, compensation events, programme updates). Skilled at programme development and control (dependencies, float, critical path) and coordinating design deliverables/packages. Excellent communicator--able to lead firm but constructive conversations with contractors, clients, and consultants. Comfortable working across multiple teams and studios, introducing structured processes and driving adoption. Highly organised, detail-focused, and proactive; strong report writing and presentation skills. Proficient with standard PM tools and platforms. A collaborative mindset and ability to work across teams and disciplines A strategic approach to problem-solving and process improvement Willingness to work regularly from our Plymouth Studio and attend project meetings as required

Desirable Skills




Previous experience in healthcare project delivery (acute or mental health projects). Background in architectural practice, contractor-side project management, or design management. Familiarity with the processes and workflows of architectural design and technical delivery across all RIBA stages. Proficiency in managing and coordinating delivery packages across multidisciplinary teams. Familiarity with MMC and BIM workflows Interest in long-term operational strategy and internal project management Major (50m+) project experience
