Are you a practical, hands-on person who enjoys taking ownership, leading by example and making sure everything runs smoothly behind the scenes?
At
Apollo Hotel Birmingham
(126 bedrooms, conference & banqueting, minutes from the city centre), we're looking for a
Maintenance Manager
to take overall responsibility for the hotel's maintenance function and join our small, friendly, owner-managed team.
Because we're an independently owned, single-site hotel, this is a genuinely all-round role - you'll be both
organising
the maintenance operation and
rolling up your sleeves
to get things done. You will be the "go-to" person for keeping the building safe, smart and fully operational for our guests and team.
What you'll be doing
Working closely with the General Manager and Heads of Department, you will:
Take overall responsibility for the
day-to-day maintenance of the hotel
, including bedrooms, public areas, back-of-house and the hotel grounds.
Plan, prioritise and allocate maintenance tasks
from the hotel's maintenance log, ensuring issues are resolved promptly and to a high standard.
Carry out
hands-on repairs and maintenance
, including basic plumbing, electrical, joinery, decorating and general repairs.
Oversee and support simple
CCTV, telephony and basic IT-related issues
(e.g. checking connections, replacing simple components).
Implement and maintain a
preventative maintenance schedule
for key areas, plant rooms, equipment and building systems.
Liaise with and coordinate specialist contractors
(electrical, plumbing, lifts, fire safety, etc.), ensuring work is completed safely, on time and in line with hotel standards.
Ensure all maintenance work is carried out in accordance with
Health & Safety, Fire Safety and COSHH
requirements and that appropriate records are kept.
Monitor and manage
maintenance stock, tools and equipment
, keeping the workshop and stores tidy, organised and secure.
Provide clear, timely
communication with other departments
(Reception, Housekeeping, F&B, etc.) so they are aware of any works affecting guests or operations.
Where applicable,
guide and support any maintenance assistants or occasional helpers
, setting standards and leading by example.
No two days will be the same - you'll balance planning and oversight with practical, hands-on work to keep the hotel running smoothly.
What we're looking for
We're looking for a reliable, organised and practical all-rounder who takes pride in their work and enjoys leading a small maintenance function.
You will ideally have:
At least 5 years' experience
in a maintenance / facilities / engineering role, with some experience taking the lead or managing maintenance for a building or site (hotel or similar environment preferred).
Strong basic skills
across key trades - e.g. plumbing, electrics, joinery, decorating and general building repairs.
A solid understanding of
safe working practices
, with good awareness of Health & Safety, Fire Safety and COSHH(formal training or certificates an advantage).
Experience
organising and prioritising workloads
, planning preventative maintenance and managing multiple tasks at once.
Confidence to
diagnose issues
, decide when you can fix something in-house and when to engage a specialist contractor.
Good communication and people skills
- able to work well with colleagues at all levels and deal politely with guests when needed.
A positive, calm and
hands-on leadership style
- happy to set standards, lead by example and do whatever is needed to keep the hotel in good working order.
What we offer
A
full-time, permanent role
in a well-established, busy 3-star hotel.
A
competitive salary (c. 28,000 per annum)
paid monthly.
Company pension
.
Staff discounts
on hotel services (details discussed at interview).
The opportunity to
take ownership of the maintenance function
in an independently owned hotel where your ideas and improvements are noticed.
Regular interaction with
experienced external professionals
across different trades, allowing your technical and organisational skills to develop naturally over time.
A supportive, close-knit team where you're known by name, not a number, and where the impact of your work is visible every day.

prove your eligibility to live and work in the UK
