to be based at our customers site in Gaydon.
Our Engineering Research and Development department (ER&D) is a fast-growing function within Tata Technologies Limited that is assembled to work on exciting projects globally for multiple customers. It comprises highly specialized engineers across Automotive, Aerospace and Industrial Heavy Machinery.
The Role:
We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer - Cooling specializing in thermal components integration within Electric Drive Units (EDUs) to support concept and M1 development for multiple P4 EDUs in a new PHEV platform. This role involves mechanical layout, cooling system packaging, and close collaboration with internal and external teams to deliver robust thermal solutions integrated within the EDU architecture.
Key Responsibilities:
Thermal System Integration
Lead the mechanical integration of thermal components such as cooling jackets, manifolds, and fluid connectors within EDU assemblies.
Define and develop cooling system layouts for EDU(s), ensuring optimal thermal performance and manufacturability.
Interface with system architects, inverter and motor teams to ensure seamless integration of thermal paths.
Mechanical Design & Analysis
Create 3D models and 2D drawings using Siemens NX and Teamcenter, ensuring high-quality design output.
Apply first-principles engineering to perform basic 1D calculations related to:
o Heat transfer
o Pressure drop
o Structural integrity (e.g., bolted joints, strength calcs)
Support thermal and mechanical design reviews through clear documentation and technical reasoning.
Project & Supplier Coordination
Support delivery of thermal components through concept to production readiness.
Engage with suppliers (TBC) to support component development, feasibility, and validation planning.
Contribute to project management tasks including tracking of deliverables, milestone planning, and status reporting.
Cross-Functional Support
Collaborate with electrical, inverter, and eMotor teams to address packaging, performance, and thermal interaction challenges.
Participate in system-level trade-offs and packaging reviews during early-stage development.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
Experience in mechanical design experience in thermal systems or EDU/powertrain development.
Proficiency in Siemens NX and Teamcenter for component and system packaging.
Strong understanding of cooling system design fundamentals and thermal-mechanical interactions.
Demonstrated ability to perform first-principles engineering analyses and communicate results effectively.
Prior experience with design review processes and cross-functional collaboration.
Advantageous skills:
Experience with EDU or power electronics cooling systems.
Exposure to cell-to-busbar welding or cell-level thermal management strategies.
Familiarity with basic component-level FEA tools and methods.
Automotive or EV development experience, ideally in PHEV or BEV platforms.
