About Us



Oak Grove College is a community generic special school providing special education for 281 students with learning difficulties/disabilities from Year 7 to Year 14. We are part of the Thrive Federation of Schools which also includes Palatine Primary School, Herons Dale School and Cornfield School.

We are also in an exciting phase of development, with a brand-new, purpose-built music facility currently underway. This will include a professional recording studio, two dedicated practice rooms and a specialist teaching space. In addition, our provision is further enhanced by a sensory music room equipped with innovative music technology, including Optibeam, supporting inclusive and engaging musical experiences for all learners.



Alongside this, we hold the Artsmark Platinum Award, recognising our exceptional and sustained commitment to high-quality arts education.

We are seeking a passionate and creative Music Teacher to join our team who is:

A programme of support and training will be offered to develop your understanding and skills in special educational needs within a supportive environment.



Applicants who are invited to interview will also be observed working with a class of students to demonstrate how they interact with students and structure learning.

Purpose of Job



Teaching music to students within the college, and carrying out such other duties as may be reasonable assigned by the Head Teacher.


Particular Responsibilities:





To ensure the effective communication of Oak Grove's Philosophy, Aims and Policies to staff, students and outside agencies.

To teach, according to their special educational needs, students assigned in the class group. This will include planning and developing a differentiated curriculum for the assigned age-group and working to support student's individual objectives.

To supervise the work of classroom assistants relevant to the allocated class or group.

To ensure planning and assessment deadlines are met.

To control and oversee the use and storage of teaching materials and equipment provided for class usage.

To maintain care, control and discipline in accordance with the rules and systems of the college.

To contribute to meetings, discussions and management systems necessary to co-ordinate the work of the college as a whole.

To promote equal opportunities within the college and to seek to ensure the implementation of the equal opportunities policy, which may include participation in outreach links with other schools in accordance with the college's policy on inclusion.

To promote and foster good relationships and effective liaison with parents/carers to support student progress.

To promote and foster good relationships and effective liaison with other staff include our multi-disciplinary team to support student progress.

To promote good relationships and effective liaison with all appropriate external agency professionals involved with the college.

To promote goodwill and positive public relations with individuals and groups in the local area and the wider community.


Specific Music Responsibilities:





Lead and develop extra-curricular music provision, including the Oak Grove Band and school choir and ensembles.

Contribute actively to the planning and delivery of the school arts calendar and music curriculum

Organise and rehearse students for performances, concerts, assemblies and community events.

Oversee and coordinate, with the Lead Teacher, peripatetic and instrumental music teachers, ensuring high quality provision.

Demonstrate strong knowledge of music technology, adaptive technology including platforms such as Garageband, Ableton, and related software, to support teaching and performance.

Plan, deliver and evaluate engaging music lessons that support creativity, performance, composition and listening skills across a range of abilities.

Support students in preparing for accredited music courses, awards or recognised qualifications where appropriate.

Adapt musical activities and resources to meet a wide range of specific needs, including sensory, physical and communication needs.

Support whole school music initiatives, themed days, or creative projects linked to the wider curriculum


Key Tasks:





To monitor and report to parents on the progress of students.

To liaise with all staff in other subject areas and college departments.

To assess student achievement and progress in accordance with arrangements agreed within the college and by reference to the provisions contained in student's statements and annual review reports.

To maintain records, attend case conferences and liaise with special needs support services and other outside agencies, as required, regarding individual students.

To mark class or group attendance registers.

To participate in arrangements made by the Headteacher for the appraisal of his/her own performance.
