Steve Vick International (SVI) is dedicated to delivering cost-saving solutions for damaged, redundant, or outdated pipework. Since its foundation in 1981, SVI has been at the forefront in developing products and techniques for the repair, renovation and decommissioning of pipes. Predominantly our work has been in the gas industry but increasingly we are undertaking projects in the water and nuclear sectors. As we expand our operations and diversify our products, this position will support an established engineering team to help maintain SVI's market position in the gas, water, and nuclear markets.
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Plant and Hire department manager to lead our engineering team of supervisors and fitters and ensure that all projects comply with company procedures, industry best practice and legal requirements.

Role Purpose
In the role of Plant and Hire Manager, you will need to effectively lead and manage workshop activities to ensure the engineering team are achieving the required standards of quality service through the availability and operational efficiency of equipment and machinery within the business.
A key focus of this role is to ensure adherence to safety standards, regulatory compliance and company policies and procedures while fostering a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence.

Competencies, Skills and Knowledge
Proven ability to lead, motivate and develop a team of engineers, supervisors and fitters, fostering a positive and high-performing culture.
Strong understanding of mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical engineering principles relevant to plant, tools and equipment used in the gas, water or utilities sectors.
Excellent working knowledge of health and safety legislation (including LOLER, PUWER, and COSHH) and a commitment to maintaining safe systems of work.
Skilled in scheduling maintenance, inspections, and repairs to ensure equipment availability and minimise downtime.
Capable of identifying root causes of technical and operational issues and implementing effective, practical solutions.
Dedicated to delivering excellent service to both internal and external customers, maintaining high standards of communication and responsiveness.
Proactive in identifying process enhancements, promoting innovation, and driving operational efficiency.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across departments and represent the engineering function at a senior level.
Understanding of budgeting, cost control, and resource management within a plant or engineering environment.
Competent in using maintenance and stock management systems and standard business applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
Ideally qualified to degree level in Operations Management, Business Management, Engineering or a related field.
Key Duties/Responsibilities
Be responsible for providing effective and unified leadership for the workshop team, ensuring they are aware of their individual objectives, are competent and their performances are monitored, assessed and developed.
Maintain agreed levels of component and finished stock for sale.
Oversee the management and maintenance of SVI's hire fleet, scheduling regular LOLER inspections and ensuring all equipment is in excellent working condition and ready for hire.
Develop and implement a comprehensive inspection and maintenance programme for all fleet equipment, ensuring it meets operational and legal standards including documented service requirements.
Ensure timely inspections, repairs, and preventive maintenance are performed to minimise downtime and maximise fleet availability.
Maintain excellent customer service levels around external and internal customer requirements and ensuring the department remains compliant with auditing standards.
Work with internal and external stakeholders to ensure solutions meet business needs.
Identify process improvements to lower production costs and reduce operational variation and enhance finished product consistency.
Maintain thorough knowledge of all industry-specific regulatory frameworks that affect engineering practices.
Always promote and ensure safe working practices across our sites.
Ensure the team has the necessary resources, tools and training to operate effectively and safely.
Identify development needs and opportunities and provide coaching/training to develop technical capability.
Carry out frequent site visits which will involve a degree of regular travel.
