PMLD Teaching Assistant

Summary


Sense Education is seeking a compassionate and resilient Teaching Assistant to join a specialist provision supporting children and young people with PMLD. This is a rewarding classroom-based role where you'll be part of a close-knit team delivering a highly personalised, sensory curriculum.

The Role



Work alongside a qualified teacher and a team of dedicated support staff to create a calm, caring, and engaging classroom environment Support pupils during lessons tailored to sensory learning needs, often on a 1:1 or small group basis Help implement therapy sessions including physiotherapy, swimming, and sensory play Use communication tools such as Makaton or picture exchange systems Provide support during mealtimes, including use of specialist feeding equipment where required Support personal care routines and use hoisting equipment as needed Maintain accurate learning and reading journals when asked

Who We're Looking For


This role is ideal for someone with experience in care, health, or support settings, or anyone with personal experience supporting individuals with complex needs. You might have worked with adults or children, and we welcome those looking to transition into education from related sectors.

You'll need to be:

Kind, calm, and patient under pressure Reliable and consistent with a strong sense of teamwork Adaptable to the individual needs of pupils Confident in using or learning alternative communication methods
While qualifications in care, childcare, or health are an advantage, they're not essential. Your attitude, experience, and willingness to learn are what matter most.

About the School


This is a well-resourced specialist setting with small class sizes (typically 5-7 pupils), a strong staff-to-pupil ratio, and dedicated input from external professionals and therapists. You'll be supported in your role and matched to the class age group (primary or secondary) where you can make the greatest impact.

Working Hours


Full-time or part-time
8.30am to 3.30pm, Monday to Friday
Immediate start available

Safeguarding children is an integral part of what we do and we have a stringent safer recruitment process. We undertake checks on all the candidates we work with. As such we require a current Enhanced DBS Disclosure for everyone working in Schools. If you do not have a subscription to the DBS Update Service, you may be required to complete a new DBS application as part of the registration process. If you take a temporary role with Sense Education you will be paid on a weekly basis. All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position but long term. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available.
