SEN Specialist Teaching Assistant - Full-Time (NW2, Brent)

An inclusive and committed primary school in the
NW2 area of Barnet
is urgently seeking a
highly experienced SEN Teaching Assistant or SEN Specialist
to work 1:1 with a
Year Group pupil
who presents with
complex needs
. This is a full-time position starting in
September
, with a clear focus on re-engagement and emotional support.
About the Pupil
The child has diagnoses of
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
and
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
. He demonstrates a strong
demand-avoidant profile
, is significantly
disengaged from learning
, and struggles to access the mainstream classroom, despite extensive and creative interventions from the school.
Efforts have included:
Differentiated academic planning
Withdrawal from class for supported interventions
Behaviour and reward-based strategies
Despite these, the pupil continues to face high levels of dysregulation and resistance to structured learning, with mainstream proving an increasingly unsuitable environment.
What the Role Requires
We are seeking a
serious, skilled SEN professional
who can build a relationship from the ground up and create a space where the pupil feels emotionally safe and respected. You will need to lead with empathy but hold strong boundaries, be adaptable, and have a deep understanding of PDA-like traits and trauma-informed practice.
Essential Candidate Qualities
Proven success working 1:1 with high-needs, emotionally avoidant pupils
Experience with
ASD, ADHD
, and
complex behavioural profiles
Calm, consistent, and emotionally robust
Skilled at
low-demand communication
, choice-based strategies, and non-confrontational approaches
Able to work collaboratively with SENCOs, behaviour leads, and families
This is a challenging but deeply rewarding role for a SEN specialist who is ready to make a profound difference. The child needs stability, respect, and a practitioner who is unphased by refusal and resistance.
