Hays Technology are working in partnership with Loughborough University to recruit a Senior Database Administrator on a permanent basis.

About the role:

The role is to apply expert level knowledge for all database and Middleware technology, with hands on technical support for teams which use these databases to underpin University services. This includes Microsoft and Oracle SQL databases, Fusion Middleware, Apex applications and how these services are accessed and delivered on end user devices.

Working together with colleagues in IT Services and across the University, the post holder will be engaged in a varied set of projects and initiatives including the transformation of how databases services are provided.

Job Duties:

  • Is responsible for the operation of all components of the University Microsoft and Oracle databases.
  • Working with team members to ensure the: provision of a stable service; technical development; monitoring of quality and performance; production of regular reports; change, incident and request management; risk management; defining standards and monitoring compliance; routine maintenance; changes eg new versions of software, patches; documentation; and incident handling.
  • Is responsible for service improvements and projects relating to technical expertise. This includes working with stakeholders to analyse and understand requirements, contribute technical content, and work to provide innovative IT solutions to support specialist academic functions. This includes the management and co-ordination of consultants and contractors working in support of the responsibilities of the team, as necessary.
  • Supports the Student and Corporate Services teams in providing technical expertise, assisting with database design, performance issues, and database integration.
  • Initiates speedy and permanent resolution to problems in database systems and services, by coordinating the efforts of the resolution team. Documents such incidents and problems using appropriate processes and systems. Matches unresolved incidents against existing problems, known errors and other incidents.
In order to apply for the role, you must have the following skills, knowledge and experience:
  • Experience of managing a large database system based on a recent version of Microsoft SQL Server (eg, MSSQL 2019), ideally running on a Windows Server platform.
  • Experience of installing and managing SQL Server Reporting Services.
  • Experience of Powershell batch Scripting for automating a broad range of administration tasks (eg database shutdown and startup scripts).
  • Experience of creating automated database backups, database recovery, and cloning for development/testing purposes.
  • Experience of using management and performance monitoring tools to monitor the performance and smooth running of Microsoft and Oracle databases.
  • Experience of writing T-SQL and Powershell code/scripts to develop routine database maintenance tasks.
  • Experience of debugging SQL transactions, reviewing explain plans and query optimisation techniques.
  • Experience of establishing an extremely effective working relationship with colleagues across the university.
  • Ability to effectively optimise, appropriately size, and configure both Microsoft and Oracle databases for a large scale deployment.
  • Ability to effectively implement IT security controls including: enabling security features/controls, patching, and auditing.
Desirable criteria:
  • Experience in coding/Scripting solutions in a DevOps style to manage Microsoft and Oracle based environments on-premise and in the cloud.
  • Experience of using DevOps style processes eg Code Repository, Continuous Integration, and automation to manage infrastructure services.
  • Experience of managing Oracle, MySQL and other open source database technologies.
  • Experience of migrating database workloads from on-premise to cloud hosting providers.
  • Experience of running Oracle web services and APEX applications
  • Experience within the HE/FE sector.
