Senior Support Worker - Children's Residential Home

Salary:

31,000 plus 55 per sleep-in (1-2 per week) and optional overtime

Purpose of the Role

The Senior Support Worker plays a key role in the day-to-day running of a children's home providing high-quality residential care for young people aged 7-17 with mild to moderate learning difficulties, communication needs, and/or autism spectrum conditions.

You will provide consistent, nurturing care within a therapeutic framework, lead shifts, support colleagues, and ensure that every child is given the opportunity to grow, develop, and achieve their fullest potential.

Key Responsibilities

Child-Centred Care

Act as a role model for best practice in supporting children with learning difficulties, autism, and behavioural needs. Promote safety, stability, and therapeutic care in line with Positive Behaviour Support (PBS), PERMA, Active Support, and Trauma-Informed Practice. Build positive relationships, encouraging participation in education, hobbies, and community activities. Support children to develop independence, life skills, and self-esteem.

Leadership & Team Support

Lead shifts and ensure staff follow care plans, risk assessments, and routines. Provide supervision, guidance, and on-the-job coaching for Support Workers. Support the management team in maintaining high standards of care and safeguarding practice. Contribute to a culture of reflection, empathy, and professional growth.

Safeguarding & Compliance

Ensure safeguarding policies and procedures are followed at all times. Maintain accurate records, reports, and documentation in line with regulations. Support management in ensuring Ofsted standards and quality benchmarks are met.
Person Specification

Experience of working in residential childcare, ideally with young people with autism, learning difficulties, or behavioural challenges. Minimum Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare (or willingness to work towards). Strong knowledge of safeguarding, behaviour management, and therapeutic approaches. Ability to remain calm under pressure, with excellent communication and resilience. A commitment to equality, diversity, and the rights of children.
