People travel with Northern because they want services they can rely on - and your work will help make that possible. As part of our Service Development team, you'll shape the future of our timetable, ensuring that every journey we offer is designed with both our customers and colleagues in mind. From making sure the right trains are in the right place at the right time, to finding smarter ways to use our resources, you'll play a key part in how Northern keeps the North moving.
What you'll be doing
Identifying and Evaluating new train service options, from tweaks to the timetable to big-picture timetable and infrastructure changes.
Preparing detailed service specifications and managing the production of timetables for Northern's routes.
Helping to shape our resource strategy - from depot workloads to rolling stock deployment - so we get the best out of our fleet and crews.
Taking part in long-term "blue sky thinking" that explores how we can enhance and evolve Northern's timetable and services.
Working closely with Network Rail and other operators to support projects that improve performance.
About you
Here are some of the essentials you'll bring to the table:
Eye for detail and the ability to think analytically and a good problem solver.
A strong grasp of how network capacity, train services and resources all connect.
Experience of timetable and unit planning, including the technical side of signalling, planning and route geography preferred.
Confidence in testing different options - whether that's a new service pattern, rolling stock proposal or infrastructure plan - and understanding the knock-on effects.
Familiarity with Track Access Agreements and train planning systems desirable.
Project management skills, plus the ability to collaborate with a wide range of partners/colleagues
A clear, confident communicator - both on paper and in person.

Why Northern?
We're more than just a train operator. We're the heartbeat of the North - connecting communities, creating opportunities, and driving sustainable growth. With 2,500 trains running daily, we're on a mission to improve rail travel and enhance the customer experience while protecting the environment.
Back in 1825, the first passenger train set off in the North of England, after which rail quickly spread across the globe - and this year, we're celebrating 200 years of the modern railway. As we look back on the historic events that led us here, we also look towards the future as we move into the era of Great British Rail. Join us at this pivotal moment in rail history and play your part in our journey.
A place for everyone
The best journeys happen when everyone feels welcome on board.
At Northern, we don't just move people from A to B - we're building a team where everyone feels they belong. Our talent team can make reasonable adjustments to the process if that's something you need. We're also a Level 2 Disability Confident employer, so if you meet the minimum criteria for the role, we'll always offer an interview.
We automate parts of our screening process to remove any unconscious bias and to make sure every application is treated fairly. All successful offers will be subject to a DBS check and a medical assessment.
No matter your background, experience, or whether you call it a bap, barm, or cob... there's a place for you here in the railway.
