and can deliver accurate, buildable PV designs for domestic and/or commercial projects. You'll be responsible for producing OpenSolar designs, system layouts, performance estimates, and supporting technical documentation, with a strong emphasis on electrical and PV engineering fundamentals.
This role is practical and competency-based:
you will be asked to demonstrate your OpenSolar workflow and design approach at interview.
Key Responsibilities
Produce end-to-end
PV system designs in OpenSolar
(layout, strings, inverters, shading/irradiance modelling, yield estimates).
Create compliant, buildable design packs (as required): SLDs, equipment selections, cable routes/assumptions, and design notes.
Select appropriate PV equipment (modules, inverters, optimisers/MLPE where applicable, isolators, protection devices).
Review site information (plans, satellite imagery, surveys) and translate it into accurate system layouts and constraints.
Identify and communicate design risks early (shading, roof constraints, string limits, voltage/current constraints, export limits, etc.).
Collaborate with operations/installation teams to ensure designs are practical and installable.
Support technical queries pre-install and during delivery where required.
Essential Skills & Experience
Strong, demonstrable proficiency in OpenSolar
(you must have real project design experience).
Solid understanding of
relevant to PV (AC/DC fundamentals, protection concepts, isolation, earthing principles).
Able to produce consistent designs that align with typical UK installation expectations and site constraints.
High attention to detail: you don't rely on software outputs without validating assumptions.
Clear technical communication (written and verbal).
Desirable (Nice to Have)
UK market experience (domestic and/or commercial PV).
Familiarity with battery design principles (even if not the core of the role).
Knowledge of common UK standards/frameworks (e.g., general awareness of BS 7671 / DNO/export constraints / MCS expectations).
Experience producing or reviewing design packs for installers.
Interview Demonstration (Important)
Shortlisted candidates will be asked to complete a practical assessment, such as:
Building a PV design in
OpenSolar
from a supplied site brief (roof/array constraints + target size).
Explaining key choices (panel layout, shading assumptions, inverter selection, stringing approach).
Identifying design risks and presenting mitigations.
What We Offer
Consistent workflow and pipeline of projects.
Remote-friendly working (where applicable).
Opportunity to work with a quality-driven team and improve design standards.
Competitive salary/rate based on experience.
How to Apply
Apply via Indeed with:
CV
A short cover note outlining your
OpenSolar experience
(types of projects, typical system sizes, your role).
If available, anonymised examples of design outputs (screenshots/export PDFs) are welcome.
