The Student Support Advice Team are passionate about the student experience and are always looking at ways to improve our service.
The role of a Student Support Adviser is to provide students with information and advice on a wide range of university matters including: Programme-related issues, options and module choices. Academic regulations, procedures and rules.
Transferring to other programmes within the University.
What to do if unforeseen personal or medical issues affect their studies or assessments, including bereavement and significant life events such as war, natural disaster, victim of crime, friend/family critically or seriously ill.
Changing Direction. Conversations regarding withdrawing from the University or taking time out from study.
Pregnancy support - we work with the student and the academic department to agree a plan to support their studies.
Student Support Advisers can also help to co-ordinate support by signposting or referring students to other specialist services where appropriate.

What does a day in the life of a Student Support Adviser (SSA) look like?
There is a team rota in place where work is assigned as follows:
Appointments. 20-minute appointments are delivered either on campus (including face to face/phone/via a team's call) or working remotely (from home). A range of systems are used before, during and after a student appointment including UWEs enquiry (Infohub) and casework (Advocate) systems and appointment notes are completed and sent to the student following the appointment.
Duty Student Support Adviser at Frenchay Campus. This role involves being a physical representative for the team working from the Student Advice area in the main office, working closely with the Information Point Advisers.
Touchpoint Duty Student Support Adviser. This role is telephone-based, using the Touchpoint telephone system to field internal staff queries that come through to the Student Advice Team Duty telephone number. This may involve talking with students who are transferred through at source of enquiry. Conversations with students at this point may lead to resolution or the need to book in for a SSA appointment.
Other queries that come through to the Student Advice Team are via the Student Advice in-box and those that are referred via an Infohub Get help form, are picked up and worked on by the SSA along with other associated tasks.
About you
Skills/experience
You should have experience of providing advice and guidance in a complex organisation.
You will have high level communication skills and the ability to build rapport quickly with students.
You will be able to show evidence of building relationships with other services colleagues.
You will have experience of dealing with challenging personal scenarios with students or customers.
You will be able to deal calmly and sensitively with difficult or distressed people who may be experiencing a very challenging situation such as a mental health crisis; and able to manage own wellbeing and ask for support when needed.
You will have a can-do attitude and foster this amongst colleagues and be able to respond positively to rapidly changing situations. You will be resilient and able to deal with challenging situations.
You will be proficient in managing your own workload.
It will be essential to have good IT skills and be digitally capable in a range of systems and processes. Attention to detail is also a key requirement of the role.
Where is this role based?
One post is based at our lively Frenchay campus where we have invested in the latest facilities and resources to give both our staff and students access to everything they need to succeed.
One post will also involve working at our City Campus in Bristol city centre which comprises of Bower Ashton Studios, Arnolfini, Spike Island and Watershed and is home to UWE Bristol's creative and cultural subjects.

There are 2 roles available;
Role 1
is a full-time permanent post, working 37 hours per week primarily based at our Frenchay campus. The working pattern will be 10.00-18.00 Monday to Thursday, 10.00-17:30 on Fridays, with the option to work 09.00-16.30/17.00 during student vacation periods.
Role 2
is a full-time fixed term post until August 2026, working 37 hours per week working across Frenchay and City campus. The working pattern will be 08.30 or 09:00 - 16:30/17:00 all year round
