Job Purpose
Reporting to the Managing Director, as Transport Manager, you will oversee the daily operations of our transport department, ensuring the safe, efficient, and compliant movement of powered access and associated equipment. You will manage a team of professional HGV drivers, coordinate movement orders, and maintain full regulatory compliance across all transport activities. A key part of your role will be the onboarding, training, and continual development of the driver team to ensure high standards of safety, performance, and professionalism.
With a growing fleet of over 20 HGVs, service vans, specialist vehicles including truck-mounted platforms, and a wide range of powered access machinery, we pride ourselves on operational excellence, customer satisfaction, and full compliance with transport and safety regulations.
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
Transport & Service Fleet Management
Oversee scheduling, routing, and dispatch of circa 20 HGVs and specialist vehicles including truck-mounted platforms.
Provide the operations team with workable solutions that meet customer needs and ensure compliance.
Ensure all vehicles are maintained, inspected, and serviced in line with DVSA and company standards.
Manage vehicle records, MOTs, servicing schedules, and defect reporting and rectification.
Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Compliance & Safety
Ensure full compliance with all transport legislation including:
o Operator Licence obligations
o EU Drivers' Hours and Tachograph Regulations
o STGO (Special Types General Order) regulations for abnormal indivisible loads (AILs), including:
o Correct categorisation (STGO Cat 1, 2, or 3)
o Notification to police and highway authorities
o Vehicle markings, speed limits, and axle configurations
o Load securing and movement planning
Ensure specialist vehicles such as truck mounts are operated within legal and safety parameters.
Ensure access platforms and plant equipment are loaded within legal and safety parameters and best practice guidance.
Conduct regular audits and risk assessments.
Work in conjunction with SH&E department to produce and continually improve RAM's.
FORS Practitioner and ability to Lead on FORS, CLOCS, and other accreditation schemes as required.
Driver Team Leadership
Manage the recruitment, onboarding, and induction of new drivers.
Develop and deliver structured training programmes including CPC, STGO awareness, truck mount operation, safety protocols, and customer service.
Conduct regular performance reviews and provide coaching and support.
Foster a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, and teamwork.
Monitor driver wellbeing and promote a positive working environment.
Reporting and Administration
Produce transport KPIs and reports for senior management
Maintain transport management systems and digital records
Manage transport budgets and contribute to cost-saving initiatives.
Contribute to environmental and sustainability initiatives.
Required Skills
Proven experience as a Transport Manager in a similar environment.
Strong knowledge of HGV operations, transport legislation, and compliance.
CPC Transport Manager qualification and experience managing an Operator Licence.
In-depth understanding of STGO regulations and abnormal load movements.
Experience managing specialist vehicles such as truck-mounted platforms.
Excellent leadership, communication, and organisational skills.
Proficient in transport management software and Microsoft Office.
Experience in powered access or construction equipment logistics is highly desirable.
Passion for developing people and building high-performing teams.
Commercial acumen and ability to balance customer requests with business impact.
Customer-focused mindset with a commitment to safety and quality.
Full UK driving licence.
FORS Practitioner
Monday - Friday, 7am - 5pm. On call requirements and occasional weekend work.
