We are seeking a detail-oriented Commercial Administrator to support the commercial and estimating functions on utility projects, including excavation, ducting, electrical cabling, and reinstatement in the public highway. The successful candidate will assist in the financial management of live projects, subcontractor coordination, and the preparation of competitive pricing for future works.
Scope of the Role:
As Commercial Administrator, you will work closely with the commercial team, project managers, and operational staff to ensure accurate cost control, valuation, and reporting. You will play a key role in supporting procurement, project estimating, subcontract management, and commercial administration across utility projects. How You'll Succeed:
Assisting with the preparation and submission of valuations and applications for payment.
Supporting the commercial administration of subcontractor packages, including payments and variations.
Measuring completed works on-site (e.g., excavations, ducting, cable pull-throughs, and reinstatement).
Monitoring project costs and assisting in cost forecasting and reporting.
Supporting the preparation of estimates and tender submissions for new works.
Reading drawings and specifications to produce quantities and pricing schedules.
Obtaining and analysing subcontractor and supplier quotations.
Maintaining records and documentation to support change management and commercial claims.
Collaborating with site teams to ensure alignment of actual progress with commercial outputs.
Assisting with post-contract final account preparation and close-out.
Key Responsibilities:
Commercial & Financial Management
Assist with procurement and commercial management of subcontractor packages.
Monitor project spend and highlight risks or cost deviations.
Support financial reporting and reconciliation across utility contracts.
Track quantities and productivity data against budgets.
Estimating & Pre-Contract Support
Help develop pricing for tenders and quotations.
Interpret design information to prepare take-offs and bills of quantities.
Contribute to tender documentation, including rates, assumptions, and risks.
Site Support & Record Keeping
Attend site visits to record work done and verify progress.
Keep accurate records of variations, scope changes, and site instructions.
Ensure documentation is maintained in line with commercial and audit requirements.
What It Takes:
Strong interest or experience in quantity surveying or estimating within civil engineering or utilities.
A methodical and analytical approach to numbers and cost control.
Good communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work flexibly and travel to multiple sites when required.
Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
Proficient in Microsoft Excel and basic commercial reporting tools.
Qualifications:
Essential:
Full UK Driving Licence.
Knowledge of civil or utility works, particularly in excavation, ducting, and reinstatement.
Desirable:
Experience working with NEC or similar forms of contract.
Familiarity with NRSWA and highway reinstatement standards
