Job description

The Centre for Gene Therapy and Regenerative Medicine (CGTRM) is the nucleus of a vibrant scientific and clinical community engaged in research into stem cells and their potential therapeutic benefits. It occupies the entire 28th floor of Guy\'s Hospital tower and is equipped with a large open plan laboratory including chemical, tissue culture, histology, microscopy and storage rooms.

The Sancho Lab in the CGTRM is seeking a technician to provide technical support to the lab. The post holder will be responsible for the organization of freezers, fridges, ordering, maintaining some lines, re-stocking and some support experiments to projects in the lab if needed.

Experience in cell culture is good, as is the ability to work independently and accurately to high standards. You will be expected to have excellent skills in media preparation and aseptic cell culture techniques. Applicants should be studying their last BSc year in a relevant biological discipline or higher.

This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract till 31/08/2023

This is a full time post

Key responsibilities

  • Working with human induced pluripotent stem cells and cell lines as models for research
  • Contribute to the general day-to-day running of the cell culture and research laboratory, including preparation of communal media and solutions, maintenance of equipment and maintaining stocks of consumables
  • Maintain the cleanliness and organisation of tissue culture incubators and lab reagents.
  • Ordering and keeping track of consumables and ordered items.
  • Assist the department manager in ensuring compliance with Health and Safety regulations within the group including preparation of COSHH risk assessments
  • Attend and, as appropriate, present research findings at internal meetings
  • Assist in data analysis
  • From time to time, the post-holder may be required to perform other duties appropriate to the grade of the post within the department and division.
  • To be responsive to changing priorities and an evolving environment/context, maximising the efficiency of the technical support being provided and resolving problems as they arise
  • To actively engage in Continuing Professional Development and training initiatives, in line with the Technician Commitment.
  • Will be required to attend lab meetings (weekly) and one on one meetings (weekly) with their supervisor.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria

1. BSc or final year BSc student of Biomedical or related science

2. Experience in Immunofluorescence

3. Experience in primary cell culture and cell lines

4. Flexible team-worker, being proactive and responsive to colleagues

5. Excellent attention to detail and organisation skills

6. Excellent communication skills

7. Ability to work independently, prioritise tasks, and meet deadlines

Desirable criteria

1. Experience in cell culture

2. Experience in IF
